Mike’s career, as an Accounting and Finance Professional, began in the energy sector upon graduation from the University of Texas in 1975. After serving in various capacities with Elf, one of the world’s top 5 energy firms, Mike assumed the role of Divisional Controller in 1982 for the Oil and Gas Division of North American Royalties, a $300 million publicly traded company that also included a large manufacturing arm tied to the domestic auto industry. After participating in the Company’s successful transition from a public to a private firm, Mike in 1993 assumed the Corporate Controller’s position.

Mike returned to Texas in 1998 as Controller and Treasurer for Norwood Promotional Products. Mike was an integral member of its mergers & acquisitions team during which, in 1999, the Company acquired 9 industry related companies allowing Norwood to enter 2000 as a $500 million corporation and firmly establishing itself as the world’s largest company in its industry.

Eager to become a business owner after Norwood relocated out-of-state and also being keenly aware of the opportunities to represent the rapidly growing small to mid-market sector of the Austin and Central Texas market, Mike founded Derrick Business Group in 2004, a business brokerage firm, in Austin specializing in business sales and mergers and acquisitions.
